We don’t see many of these Rock Crystal Carvings these days.
Carved Figural of Liu Hai and his Chan Chu (3 legged toad)
Since we do not see many of these pieces, I consulted two very good friends who specialize in Chinese Carvings.
In recent years like many other items, we have seen a rise in copies or reproductions made to fool.
Most of these reproductions are done in glass.
The difference in the Rock Crystal Carved pieces there are the inclusions visible in the natural stone.
Chinese Rock Crystal Carved Brooch
In Glass, like many old pieces, minute bubbles maybe visible when taking a closer look.
The unique feature of these two Rock Crystal Carvings is that the pieces are carved through.
Due to the difficulty in Carving Rock Crystal, this is somewhat unique compared to pieces we normally see of this period.
We normally will see jade, carnelian and other stones carved in this matter.
The Carving depicts Liu Hai and his Chan Chu (3 legged toad).
You can see him standing on his “golden” toad, holding a string of cash or Chinese coins with bats flying above.
Chinese Export Silver Reverse
My gemologist he commented that both pieces though a set,
are carved possibly by a different person or at different times.
