The Ones The Got Away

Happy new years, alohamemorabilia, alohamemorabiliacompany, sandy watnabem

We are often asked if there is anything we’ve acquired that we would have liked to keep in our own collections.

These are estate pieces that we would have loved to keep in our own collection but have found new owners that are enjoying their newly acquired pieces.

These are a few of the estate pieces we personally like:

One jade bangle that I would have loved to keep is an unusual red jade bangle with carving.

The green veining was used as leaves and the reverse of the bangle was a different red jade color.

As 2015 draws to a close, jewelry retail trends and wearable pieces continue into 2016.

  1. Stack rings continue as a trend in wearablility in rings. Stacks of rings ranging from silver and gold bands to vintage and antique rings.  Platinum Diamond Stack Ring, alohamemorabilia.com, alohamemorabiliacompany, diamond, platinum, ring, vintage ring, estate ring

With the continued Ecological watch on natural materials used in jewelry, some of the new politically correct words to look for when buying jewelry pieces are:

2. Fair, Repurposed and Ethical  (trade, mined, sourced)  keywords to the sources of materials. Good source of these are antique and vintage jewelry or pieces repurposed.

Some information on the Sculptor;

Oskar J. W. Hansen (1892 – 1971)[2] was a Norwegian-born naturalized American sculptor who received a number of official commissions in the US. Numerous examples of his sculpture in Art Deco mode commissioned by the US Bureau of Reclamation, executed under the Los Angeles-based architect Gordon B. Kaufmann, supervising architect to the Bureau, may be seen at Hoover Dam.[3]

His sculpture Wings is installed in the lobby of the Rand TowerMinneapolis, completed in 1929.

Hansen’ statue of Liberty installed in 1957 atop a column replaced one that had been struck by lightning in 1942 at the Yorktown, Virginia, Victory Monument, commemorating the 1781 victory at Yorktown and the alliance with France that brought about the end of the American Revolution and the resulting peace with England.[4]

Monkey Time!

With the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year, we had the chance to review the various animal carvings used in jade pieces.

Most animals are from the Chinese Lunar Calendar or Mythological Creatures and or nature orientated subjects.

Almost all of the animals have some type of symbolic meaning in the Chinese Culture.

Large Carved Monkey Jade Pendant

The latest jade carved piece we acquired was a extra large carved lavender jade piece.

This particular piece is not an antiquity jade piece but rather a jadeite piece carved mid-century.

So why did we purchase this piece?

It was an unusually large piece, heavy and carved on both side of the piece.

Almost 3 inches long and 99.1 grams.

The jade piece was rounded more 3D as opposed to later flat jade pendant.

The piece also has a section of jade carved within jade. The Monkeys have their hands placed on this carved section.

Part of the appeal of this particular jade piece is the whimsical faces on the monkey pair.

Craig commented that this was a great handling jade piece. Large, rounded, cool,  it is a great stress stone.

I like this piece only because it is a standout size, the color is decent for the size and quite reasonable.

I also think it’s nice to have some mischievous monkeys around!

Vintage Natural American River Pearls

Vintage Estate 14K River Pearl Earrings

Natural, rare and valued throughout history, we have included some vintage jewelry that contains American River Pearls.

Sometimes called Mississippi River Pearls or Tennessee River Pearls, the pearls come in many shapes and sizes.

The river pearls that are normally used, are accents in jewelry pieces. These are normally smaller odd shaped baroque pearls.

Larger River Pearls are used as stand alone pieces in jewelry as in the previous photos.

A Brief History of the American River Pearl is from Wikipedia:

The “pearl rush” in North America occurred in the mid to late 1800s as people could easily find freshwater mussels in rivers and streams by “pollywogging” for mussels, some of which had freshwater pearls which they could sell for a significant price. The art of “pollywogging” involves shuffling one’s feet in the mud feeling around for freshwater mussels. Because this was relatively easy to do, and an easy way to make money from freshwater selling pearls, this period has been euphemistically called the “pearl rush”, and some historians have compared it to the gold rush in California.[13] A formal freshwater mussel fishing industry was established in the mid-1850s to take advantage of this natural resource.[14] The “pearl rush” to find freshwater pearls became so intense in some rivers that literally millions of freshwater mussels were killed in a few years. In some rivers and streams entire freshwater mussel beds were completely eliminated. Although the negative impact of the “pearl rush” on freshwater mussel populations was significant, in the cold light of history it was relatively minor compared to the over fishing that took place just a few years later with the “pearl” button industry.[13]

Freshwater pearls from North America come from freshwater mussels primarily in the family Unionidae. About 20 different species of Unionidae are commercially harvested for pearls. The common names of the most prolific pearl-bearing species include: the butterfly, ebony, elephant ear, heelsplitter, mapleleaf, three-ridge pigtoe, pimple back, pistol grip, and washboard. While white is the most common color, freshwater pearls are valued in part for their wide range of lustrous colors, including: blue, bronze, brown, copper, cream, green, lavender, pink, purple, red, salmon, silvery white, white, and yellow. The different colors of freshwater pearls are primarily a function of which species of freshwater mussel they were formed in, although various factors including position of the pearl nucleus in the shell, water quality, and species type all affect the color of the freshwater pearl.[14]

By 1899, there were sixty button factories in the river states of Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin, employing 1,917 people. Millions of “pearl” buttons were made annually. This new button industry quickly placed a huge ecological demand on the freshwater mussels of the Midwestern United States. In 1899, clammers harvested over sixteen million pounds of freshwater mussel shells in Wisconsin alone, and the harvest of freshwater mussels in the late 1890s numbered in the tens of millions of pounds per year. Freshwater mussels beds which had previously been so dense as to virtually “carpet” miles of river bottom were almost completely harvested, leaving just a few living freshwater mussel clams per mile. In 1908, in what was deemed a drastic response to the rapidly declining freshwater mussel population, the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries established a mussel propagation program at the Fairport Biological Station. The purpose of this program was to regulate the overharvesting of freshwater mussels. Freshwater mussels are slow growing sessile organisms, and their reproduction is complex. The button industry in North America was in trouble because years of over harvesting the freshwater mussels had caused a shortage of freshwater mussels and pushed many of the species close to extinction. The invention of plastic and its use in manufacturing buttons during World War II replaced shell “pearl” buttons as the most popular product, and foreshadowed the end of the pearl button manufacturing business.[11][12][13

America produces mussels that are still used for the nucleus in the cultured pearl production in Japan.

New Collection and a Question About Gold Mountings

jade, jade jewelry, estate, vintage jade, vintage jewelry, alohamemorabilia.com, alohamemorabiliacompany, sandy watanabe, gold mounts, valueingold,

A question came up about figuring out the amount of gold  that a jewelry piece has in it’s mount.

Jade Pendant, Actual Weight gold, vintage jade, estate jade, alohamemorabilia.com, alohamemorabiliacompany, sandywatanabe,

Gold Mount in Jade Pendant 3

While working on a collection, four pieces of jade pendants came into question.

We thought it best to post the information we uncovered,

since there seems to be a calculated error in figuring the percentage of gold per pendant.

Jade pendants and other type of jewelry pieces can be deceiving in gold weights only due to the

actual weights of the stone are much heavier than normal estimations in the jewelry piece.

Jade Pendant, Actual Weight gold, vintage jade, estate jade, alohamemorabilia.com, alohamemorabiliacompany, sandywatanabe,

Jade Pendant Actual Weight of Mount 4

The metal content is not the only thing that figures significantly in the value of the jewelry piece.

Rather its one of the key components that we use to figure on the valuation.

Other factors we consider are the stone, workmanship,  age and the condition of the jewelry piece.

Here are some examples of the actual gold mount weights and entire jewelry piece.

To arrive at the actual gold weights we asked our gemologist to remove the gold, weigh each mount,

then had the goldsmith reattach the gold mounts back onto the jade pieces.

Surprising information since we work with similar jewelry pieces on a regular basis.

jade, gold mount, vintage jade, estate jade, estate jewelry, alohamemorabilia.com, alohamemorabiliacompany, actualweight,

Gold Weight from Jade Pendant

jade, gold mount, vintage jade, estate jade, estate jewelry, alohamemorabilia.com, alohamemorabiliacompany, actualweight,

Jade Pendant Actual Weight of Mount 2

This is great information for our clients who are planning to sell their pieces only for the gold value.

It’s also a reminder that there are also other things to consider in the valuation of a vintage piece.

The Rule of Thumb Here: The gold value isn’t the only component for valuation.

Reuse Repurpose?

Sometimes when an estate comes in for acquisition, we need to look at items that can be repurposed before declaring the item as unusable or unsaleable.

Vintage Estate Carved Lavender Green Jadeite Bangle Bracelet

In this recent acquisition, there was a carved lavender jade bangle bracelet.

Wonderfully carved, with good translucency, the bracelet had met up with prior accident.

We can only speculate that the owner fell and fractured this wonderful bracelet.

The jade bracelet contains three fractures.

jade, jadeite, vintage jade, carved jade, carved jade bangle, estate jade, alohamemorabilia.com,

Vintage Estate Carved Lavender Jadeite Bangle Bracelet

One Fracture went right through the jade bracelet, the other two seem to be partial fractures.

The bracelet in my opinion was a beautiful bracelet.

Too beautiful to just throw out.

The decision was to hinge the bracelet to stabilize the fracture.

Upon consultation with our gemologist the decision was made to possibly hinge

the jade piece.

In a couple of weeks we will find out if the bracelet would be fitted with a new hinge.

Is the bracelet worth saving?

Yes!

Ming’s of Honolulu Carved Jadeite Brooch

mingsofhonolulu, mings, mingsbrooch, jade, old jade, carvedjade, green and white jade, alohamemorabilia.com, alohamemorabilia, sandywatanabe, honolulu,

We had the opportunity to purchase an unusual Ming’s of Honolulu Carved Jadeite Brooch.

The brooch is a beautiful carved piece and the owner felt that the brooch belonged in our collection.

We are glad the owner felt this way and we were able to acquire it.

The Jade Piece is significantly older than the actual brooch and not the “normal” jade that Ming’s typically used in their jewelry.

The Jade is carved with a (convex) curve upward the way  the jade piece is mounted.

Beautiful little flowers, leaves and vines embellish the jade piece.

The Signature Goldsmithing of Ming’s is evident in the brooch leaf work.

The Piece is also prominently marked with the impressed Ming’s mark.

From the conversation that we had with the owner several questions did come up,

Was that if this was a production piece that Ming’s sold in their retail stores?

Or

Was this a piece that was custom designed for a customer by Ming’s since they often did custom jewelry pieces?

More questions arise about Ming’s Jewelry and the pieces that Ming’s produced.

Many of the custom pieces contained no Ming’s mark.

Was Ming’s inconsistent with marking their pieces?

Or were custom pieces left unmarked to distinguish store inventory and custom designed pieces?

Ming’s also had a collection of older jade pieces, including their Nephrite jewelry pieces which makes this  jade piece a possible production piece.

The Owner mentioned that this may have been once owned by one of the family members of Mings.

More questions about the history of this brooch.

We love a good mystery story!

This makes our work even more interesting and fun!
