During our last show, dealers were sharing some of their new items for sale.
A very good friend who is the leading authority of Vintage Ming’s of Honolulu had an unusual Ming’s jade pendant in her case.

I was surprised to see this piece due to Ming’s rarely had jade pieces like the pendant in her case.
Even for my friend who has collected almost every style of Ming’s Jewelry in her collection, she shared she has never found another jade piece like this one again.

She shared further that she purchased this years ago and she wasn’t even sure when or how she has acquired the pendant.
The pendant is a Jadeite Pendant carved into a Cabbage form.
The Gold Chain Loop is prominetly marked Ming’s 14K.

After a week of considering the pendant, I broke down and called my friend to purchase the Ming’s carved jadeite Cabbage pendant.
Oh, did I mention I’ve been looking for a jade cabbage for about 20 years now!

The story about this unique split hinge bracelet is that we were offered the bracelet several months ago. We finally decided on acquiring this unworn 18K Split Hinge Diamond Enamel Bangle Bracelet.
Vintage Estate 18K Gold Basse-Taille Enamel Diamond Bracelet
The bracelet consists of over 2 Carats of prong set diamonds with Blue Basse-Taille Enamel.
So what exactly is Basse -Taille Enamel?
Basse-taille (baiss-taille) is an enamelling technique in which the artist creates a low-relief pattern in metal, usually silver or gold, by engraving or chasing. The entire pattern is created in such a way that its highest point is lower than the surrounding metal. A translucent enamel is then applied to the metal, allowing light to reflect from the relief and creating an artistic effect. It was used in the late Middle Ages, and then again in the 17th century.
The process for creating basse-taille enamel began by marking the outline of the design and the main internal outlines on the gold with a tool called a “tracer”. Then the interior area was worked, either with chasing tools, hammering and punching rather than cutting, or with chisels, to form a shallow recess to hold the enamel. In many of the recessed areas further decoration was added by either engraving or punching which would show through the translucent enamel, or to facet the background so the reflections change as the viewing angle changes slightly. Most background areas to the enamelled scenes were decorated in the same way. Finally the surfaces were cleaned up, made good and polished, perhaps including scraping off any bumps showing through on the reverse of the metal.[7]
The enamel lies flush with the gold surfaces; it was a preparation of finely ground glass paste applied with great care to the prepared recessed areas, and then fired. When different colours of enamel meet each other with a neat boundary, this was achieved by firing one colour with a retaining border of gum tragacanth before adding the next.

High Karat Chinese Brown Reed Rattan Bracelets
I have been guilty of eyeing a couple of older estate Chinese High Karat Gold Bracelets at my gemologist’s store.
Why?
Both Bracelets were High Karat Pieces with screw hinges. One of the bracelets caught my attention due to the small size of the piece. Both bracelets came from a Chinese family who knew my gemologist and decided for one reason or another they no longer wanted these bracelets.
The smaller bracelet is called a Baby or Childs Bracelet. Given to young children by family members these bracelets were once fairly common gifts.

Rarely seen in estates these days, I believe many were lost or thrown out due to being damaged.
The second High Karat Bracelet was an adult bracelet with the older Brown Reed Rattan . Newer pieces were done in Black Lacquered Reed, Rattan or other materials.

To my surprise when I asked my gemologist for a ask price on bothof these bracelets. He asked me to purchase the Baby or Childs Bracelet. He then shared that the adult bracelet was a gift .

The interest in Chinese items continues, one type of bangle that has increase with some interest are
the old inexpensive lacquered reed or rattan bangles.
I believe the interest stems from the silver workmanship that accents the bangles.
Pricing is determined by the collectibility of the bangle and the design work on it.
Recently I came across a vintage Poster on the internet of Chinese products
from the Kwong Sang Hong Company “Two Girls” products.
What interested me in the poster was the Rattan Reed Bangles worn by both of the women models including other bracelets.

I was reently gifted 3 of these Reed Rattan Bangles by a good friend of mine.
All are Accented by Chinese Design Motifs done in Silver.
Two are double stacked bangles edged with twisted Silver between the stack.
All bangle bracelets have different design work.

From a recent acqusition we purchased a questionable jade brooch.
Beautiful Jade Cabochon on White Gold Filigree Mount Brooch
Many characteristics made this particular brooch made us question the authenticity of the age and the actual stone.
Of course we naturally took a stand of caution after a consultation with our gemologist.
The gemologist and I both came to the same conclusion.
The mount of the jewelry piece seemed to be out of character with the stone so the next step
would be to send the piece to GIA.
The longer we do estate acquistions the more we feel that the certification is essential for questionable stones.
My thoughts on this particular item, it’s not confirmed as genuine until we get the report from GIA.
After a little longer wait period the piece came back as a certified GIA stone.

We have been working on several estate collections.
I thought I’d share a portion of an estate that we recently acquired.
The ensemble contained three pieces.
1) A large heavy bracelet consisting of six $5.00 Gold pieces. Set in 22Kt.
The weight is 81.7 grams
US $5.00 Gold Piece Bracelet. Liberty $5.00 Gold pieces 6 total in bracelet
2) A pair of Gold Cufflinks made of 2 $5.00 gold pieces. Also Set in 22Kt.
The weight is 28.8 grams

3) a $20.00 Saint Gaudens Set is 22KT gold. The Mount is a Chinese designed Asian Bat
that accents the $20.00 gold piece.
Total weight: 41.3 grams.
This particular pendant is a beautiful gold worked piece of jewelry.
Beautiful set a design work of Asian with American Gold coins.
The pendant as quickly bought by a dealer friend.
